Should you talk to drivers or not? I think it makes sense to talk, if you and the driver both speak the same language. Drivers often pick up hitchhikers to make their rides more interesting, so you should be happy to oblige, since they do you you a favor in taking you to where you need to get. Also, when you have good conversation, traveling is much more fun and hours pass by unnoticed.
Some drivers will start the conversation themselves, others will wait for you start. So don’t be too shy and just ask him easy questions that anyone can answer to. Here’s a list of safe conversation topics you can successfully use anytime you drive, with anybody.
- Where are you going?
- What will you do there?
- Where do you work?/ what kind of work do you do
- hitchhiking: did you try it? why do you pick up hitchhikers?
- talk about the weather
- talk about the economy, education
- movies, books, famous people
- current events
If the other person introduces a topic, don't let it drop.
Many people won’t want to talk about their personal life: family matters, love life. So never ask questions about that, unless they open the subject. But if they open up a bit to you, that’s great. You’re making friends while traveling! If you get at that point, you can maybe leave an email address or Facebook, so you can keep in touch.
